Body First, Data Second: How to Balance Intuition and Recovery Metrics

I asked Martin, Astrea’s co-founder, how he slept, and before he answered, he checked his Apple Watch. When people ask me the same question, I do something different: I tune in and ask my body first, then look at the numbers if I want to. Neither habit is wrong, but they lead to a very different relationship with your own recovery, and I’ve come to think the order matters more than which tools you use.

Why the number-first habit is so easy to fall into

Martin’s reflex isn’t unusual. A wearable gives you a single, clean number before you’ve had a chance to notice how your body actually feels, and a clean number is easier to reach for than a vague internal sense. It also feels more objective, more defensible, like something you could show someone else as proof. This is the same instinct behind the broader “quantified self” movement: if you can measure it, it must be more trustworthy than what you merely sense.
The problem isn’t that the number is wrong. It’s that reaching for it first quietly trains you to distrust your own read until a device confirms it. Do that enough mornings in a row, and you stop practicing the skill of noticing your own state at all, the same way you’d lose a language you stopped speaking. That’s a real cost, not just a preference, because that internal skill is worth building on its own, independent of whatever a screen says on any given morning.
What listening to your body actually means
It has a real, specific name: interoception, the ability to sense and interpret internal bodily signals like heart rate, muscle fatigue, tension, or a subtle sense that something feels off before you can explain why (Herbert et al., 2007).
Interoception is trainable, and athletes tend to have more of it than non-athletes. A study comparing elite sprinters and long-distance runners found both groups reported greater trust in their bodily sensations and stronger attention regulation than people who don’t train seriously, with some differences between the two disciplines in exactly how that awareness shows up (Seabury et al., 2023). People who are more accurate at detecting their own heartbeat are also better at regulating physical effort to match a target intensity, particularly at lower and moderate efforts (Herbert et al., 2007). In plain terms: the more you practice checking in with your body, the more reliable that check-in becomes.
That’s the case for feeling first. Your intuition about a hard week, a heavy leg, or an off morning isn’t a guess you’re making up. It’s a real physiological signal, and one you get better at reading the more you use it instead of outsourcing it. In practice, this can be as ordinary as noticing your legs feel heavy on the warm-up jog before you’ve looked at anything, or catching a flat, low-motivation mood that isn’t quite the same as being tired. Neither of those needs a device to register; they need attention.
This is also a more established practice than it might sound. If you’ve ever taken a yoga or Pilates class, you’ve already done a version of it: the first thing most instructors do, before any movement starts, is give the room a minute or two of quiet to check in, breath by breath, with how the body actually feels that day. That’s the exact same skill as pausing to ask yourself how you slept before reaching for your phone. It’s just usually practiced on a mat instead of in bed.
Where the numbers actually help
None of this means data is the enemy. Subjective effort ratings, the kind you generate just by asking yourself “how hard did that feel,” correlate closely enough with objective training load that the session-RPE method, multiplying perceived exertion by session duration, is used on its own by coaches to monitor athletes without any hardware at all (Foster et al., 2001). That’s a useful fact in itself: your gut sense of effort is already more measurable than it feels.
Where data adds something intuition can’t reach on its own is pattern and memory. You might feel fine on any single morning, but a multi-day dip in your recovery trend can flag accumulating fatigue before it’s consciously noticeable, and a number doesn’t forget last Tuesday the way your mood might. Used that way, data is a second opinion, not a first one, useful precisely because it isn’t trying to replace the sense you already have.
The risk shows up when the order flips and the number becomes the only opinion that counts. Checking in on your own is the safer default: research on wearable sleep tracking has documented a real pattern, sometimes called orthosomnia, where people become so focused on hitting a “perfect” sleep score that the checking itself creates the anxiety and poor sleep it was meant to prevent (Baron et al., 2017). That’s the version of “the data would make me sick” playing out clinically, and it’s exactly the trap that feeling first is designed to avoid.

What to actually do
- Before opening any app, take ten seconds to ask yourself how you actually feel: energized, flat, sore, foggy, fine. Name it in a word or two.
- Then check the data, if you want to, as a second opinion rather than the first word on the subject.
- When they agree, you’ve got a confirmed read and don’t need to think about it further.
- When they disagree, treat it as interesting rather than alarming. A low score on a day you feel great is worth noting, not obeying automatically.
- If checking a number is making you anxious rather than informed, that’s a real signal to check less often, not a personal failing.
- Build the habit gradually. Interoception improves with practice, the same way any skill does; it doesn’t arrive fully formed.

Either way, it’s worth noting the mismatch and watching what happens next, not overriding one with the other on the spot.
Does this mean I shouldn’t track anything? No. It’s about sequence, not avoidance. Data is useful for spotting trends over days and weeks that no single morning’s feeling can show you. The goal is to feel first and let data confirm or question that, not to replace the feeling entirely.
Is checking my recovery score first thing every morning a problem? It can become one. Sleep researchers have documented cases where compulsive tracker-checking creates its own anxiety and worse sleep, a pattern called orthosomnia (Baron et al., 2017). If checking a number makes you feel worse rather than more informed, that’s worth changing, regardless of how “on top of it” it feels.
How do I get better at reading my own body if I’m not used to it? The same way athletes build any other skill: repetition. Elite athletes show stronger bodily trust and attention regulation than non-athletes, which points to practice rather than a fixed trait (Seabury et al., 2023). Start with the ten-second check-in before you look at any screen, every day, and it gets easier to trust.
